A superior album of 100 handcoloured vintage albumen photographs of Japanese scenery, mounted recto/verso with protective tissue guards, each approx. 210 x 260mm, ca.1887-90, printed captions below each image, all contained in original album of decorated black-lacquered boards in good condition with slight wear, new leather spine with raised bands, faded blue oval studio wet stamp on inside front cover: 'K. Kimbei, Photographer, 36 Benten-Dori, Yokohama'; album size approx. 310 x 410 x 80mm; images of Tokyo, Yokohama vicinity, Nikko, Omama , Ikao , Haruna , Nakasendo, Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe , Arima, Tomotsu , Bingo, Nagasaki, Hakodate/Ainu. The address on the wet stamp enables us to tentatively date this album to between the years 1887 (when he was describing himself as a photographer operating from No. 36) and 1889 or 1890 when his business moved to Honcho-Dori. The colouring of most of these photographs is of exceptional quality and as good as anything we have seen before. The photography is stunning Kusakabe at his best. The Nakasendo views are exquisite. The scans here do not do justice to the photos. A museum quality album.
