very good condition vintage photograph mounted on new archival card; The inscription reads: "Sacred to the Memory of Henry C.J. Heusken, Interpreter to the American Legation in Japan Born at Amsterdam January 20th 1832. Died at Yedo January 16th 1861." On the night of January 15th, 1861 the US Legation�s interpreter, Henry Heusken, was attacked by seven sword-wielding assassins whilst riding back from a visit to the Prussian embassy�s temporary residence in Edo.
